Which Kitchen Tools and Gadgets Can You Not Live Without?

This post was originally published on this site

Hello, and welcome back to What’s Cooking?, the open thread where you get to share your brilliant thoughts, advice, recipes, and opinions on all things food-related. This week I’d like to talk about your favorite kitchen tools, utensils, and gadgets.

Between the Instant Pot, sous-vide circulators, fancy blenders, and air fryers, there are a lot of super-hyped gadgets to play around with. I’m obviously partial to those first two, but I’m also a sucker for a good wooden spoon. I want to hear what kitchen utensils and tools make your life better, and which ones you think aren’t worth the hype.

  • What is your favorite pot? I am in love with my apple-shaped Lodge Dutch oven. Beyond making soups and sauces, it’s the perfect shape and size for making no-knead bread.
  • What is your favorite pan? I love my cast iron, but my absolute favorite pan is my all-clad stainless steel sauté pan. It gets a great sear, adjusts to changes in temperature quickly, and it’s much easier to care for than cast iron.
  • What kitchen item causes you to freak out if it goes missing? I really depend on my giant Pyrex measuring cup. That spout is just so helpful.
  • Which utensil do you use way more than you thought you would? I use my immersion blender way more than my food processor. I use it to make creamy soups, to emulsify mayo, to make shakes and smoothies, and to whip cream. It’s also incredibly easy to clean, which is very important in a home with no dishwasher.
  • What so-called “life changing” appliance or utensil do you not use that much? Unless I’m doing a lot of baking, I rarely use my KitchenAid stand mixer. I do most of my batter mixing with a wooden spoon.
  • What “life changing” appliance actually changed your life? Confession: My mother was hep to the Instant Pot an entire year before I was, because I was quick to dismiss it as a “fad.” I don’t really use many of the pre-programed functions, but having an easy to use, “set-it-and-forget-it” pressure cooker does make cooking dinner much faster and tastier. (Also I am still obsessed with these cheesecakes.) I also am a huge fan of my Nespresso machine. I hate to be one of those people, but I am.
  • If you could only own one spatula or turner, which one would it be? I love my wooden turner more than any other spatula I have ever owned.
  • Do any of you have a really fancy blender? Is it worth it? I honestly don’t see the point if you have a food processor and immersion blender.
  • For those of you with the Instant Pot: has it improved your life the way your thought it would? I’m a big fan.
  • What do you think of sous-vide cooking? I mean, you know how I feel.
  • What is the most overrated hot kitchen appliance? I think fancy blenders are unnecessary, but nothing has ever been as unnecessary as the now discontinued Juicero. I also hate this salt shaker.
